St. Thomas Aquinas was the greatest of the Scholastic philosophers. He produced a comprehensive synthesis of Christian theology and Aristotelian philosophy that influenced Roman Catholic doctrine for centuries and was adopted as the official philosophy of the church in 1917.
Aquinas wrote extensively about natural law. He stated, “the light of reason is placed by nature [and thus by God] in every man to guide him in his acts.” Therefore, human beings, alone among God’s creatures, use reason to lead their lives. This is natural law.
He claims that eternal law is God’s rational plan or purpose for all things with all being the significant word that has been in existence and will continue to exist so.
By “Eternal Law’” Aquinas means God’s rational purpose and plan for all things.
It was a time when there was no political stability in a world emerging from the dark ages.
