Section 7 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita empowers courts to award rigorous, simple, or partly rigorous and partly simple imprisonment where the offence permits imprisonment of either description, subject to judicial discretion and constitutional safeguards.
Under Section 6 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, life imprisonment is reckoned as 20 years only for calculating fractions of punishment. It does not reduce a life sentence automatically and remains subject to judicial directions and statutory exceptions.
